About Us
Our Story
Noah’s Ark Family Project was started in 2010 as an interactive opportunity for children and young people to engage with selected small and large mammals. It is well-known (and scientifically proven) that interaction with a gentle, friendly pet has significant benefits. This interaction lowers blood pressure, improves cardiovascular health, and releases endorphins (oxytocin) that have a calming effect. It also diminishes physical pain and produces automatic relaxation responses. Additionally, holding, stroking, and cuddling animals such as dog or rabbit lifts the spirit and lessens depression, decreases feelings of isolation, encourages communication, provides comfort, and they act as social lubrication.
Here at Noah’s Ark Family Project, we have a collection of carefully selected animals that have been trained to work as therapy animals; including ponies, a Golden Retriever (Roxy), and French Bulldog (Nugget), a cat (Kiki), chinchillas, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and degus - all as unique as the names we invent for them. Children are encouraged to interact with them by petting, grooming, feeding, building houses, and creating obstacle courses.
The therapeutic value of this interaction is enriched by using therapy techniques to encourage bonding and attachment to aid in helping children who have been harmed to learn to trust and build bonds. We use laughter and success in new experiences to engender feelings of achievement, self worth, and confidence.
So – what is the magic that animals give? The magic comes from seeing a crying child’s tears stop when a dog enters the room. To watch a child who is has become withdrawn due to their experiences of harm and abuse, hug a golden retriever and announce that they are best friends. To watch a teenager gain the confidence to walk a pony down the bridle path and stop to talk to strangers, oozing pride and pleasure. Or to see a child who has a need to control, have that need removed when they walk a rabbit on a lead and are required to follow the rabbit.
